Murder Charge Due In Knifing: Murder Charge Readied
Police Saturday prepared to file formal charges of murder against a 40-year-old woman arrested for the fatal stabbing of a 28-year-old East Austin man Friday afternoon.
Lieutenant Merle Wells said the woman was arrested at the scene of the stabbing, Cecil's Barbecue, 424 East Sixth Street, where Verton Dodson, of 7610 Carver, was stabbed to death. Wells said that when Patrolman Ed Voight arrested the woman she held a two bladed knife that has been identified as the weapon used in the attack.
Police officers were still trying to apprehend the woman's nephew who was reported by witnesses to have hit Dodson and knocked him down on the street after the woman stabbed him.
Justice of the Peace J. H. Watson withheld his verdict after ordering an autopsy into the death.
Investigating officers said witnesses reported the woman entered the cafe about 3 p.m. Friday and accosted the man while he was sitting in a booth. She struck Dodson in the chest with the knife and as he fled from the cafe he was hit by the woman's male companion and knocked down the street in front of the building.
Dodson was rushed to Brackenridge Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival by attending doctors.
The body was taken to Fuller-Mercer Funeral Service then transferred to Phillips and Upshaw Funeral Home.
