Nebuchadnezzar C. (N.C.) Limbs 1845-1903

A barber and Odd Fellows member, N.C. Limbs created social spaces in downtown Austin’s thriving Black commercial district while supporting future leaders and community growth.

Nebuchadnezzar C. (N.C.) Limbs was born into slavery on August 20, 1845. After emancipation, Limbs became a barber and owned a barbershop on what is now West 6th Street. His barbershop was part of a thriving district of Black businesses in downtown Austin that also included restaurants, pharmacies, and dentists' offices. A cornerstone of Black life, Limbs’ barbershop served as a social hub where Black men could come together to share news, network for business, and build community.

Limbs also belonged to the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows, a fraternal organization for Black men who were not allowed to join white groups. The organization provided support to its members during illness or death and offered its lodges for social events.

Limbs married Sarah Dudley in 1882. Sarah, who worked as a housekeeper, was likely also born into slavery in Georgia. The couple did not have any children, but they supported their relatives and passed down property to help strengthen their family’s stability and wealth after Limbs’ death in 1903.
