The parents of Mary Elizabeth Horst were Frances Jane Ridge Densmore and Charles Horst. The parents of Frances Jane Ridge Densmore were Jefferson Ridge, a Cherokee farmer from Arkansas and Corine King, a Black woman. Frances Jane Ridge Densmore had four mulatto children by the slave owners son's, Charles Horst on the Horst Plantation in Austin, Texas: Ernest Edward (Ed) Horst, Mary Elizabeth Horst, Robert Horst and Walter Horst. In 1902, Mary Elizabeth Horst married Thomas Black, Sr. in Austin, Travis County, Texas. They moved to Coyle, Logan County, Oklahoma. Mr. Thomas Black, Sr. and Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Horst Black had seven children: Thomas Black, Jr., Adolph Black, Theresa Black, Edward Black, Zella Justina Black, Roy Black and Wells Black. Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Horst Black died in Logan County, Oklahoma in 1961. Giving their children a chance at a better future.
