Ernest Edward "Ed" Horst, Sr. was the mulatto son of Charles Horst, of Austin, Texas and former slave, Frances Jane Ridge Densmore. Charles Horst, born in Texas in 1847, was the son of plantation owner, Mr. Louis Horst, who was born in 1807 in Darmstadt, Germany and Mrs. Margaretha "Mary" (Krebs) Horst, born in Frankfurt on the River Main, Bavaria, Germany in 1811. Frances Jane Ridge Densmore was a former slave who was born in 1842 in Jefferson City, Missouri. The parents of Frances Jane Ridge Densmore were Jefferson Ridge, a Cherokee farmer in Arkansas and Mrs. Corine King Ridge. Note: Per the death certificate of Ernest Edward Horst, Sr., his Father's name is listed as "Charlie Horst". Mr. Ernest Edward "Ed" Horst married Miss Sarah Jane Shackelford on Oct. 15, 1889. Ed and Sarah Jane Horst had ten children: Christian, Ella, Birdie, Frances Jane, Walter, Willie, Louise, Grace, Beatrice and Ed Horst, Jr. Mr. Ed Horst, Sr. died in 1932 and is buried in Bethany Cemetery. Ed Horst was lovingly called Papa Horst by family members.
